Each option comes with its own trade-offs: a car or no car, a kitchen or none, a five-minute walk to the seafront or a twenty-minute drive from it. Here’s how to think through which one actually fits your trip.
Villa: privacy and a pool, at the cost of a car
A villa means a standalone house, usually with its own pool, terrace, and garden — no shared walls, no fixed breakfast hour, nobody to disturb but yourselves. For a family or a group of friends that’s a real advantage: kids can be in the pool while the adults cook, and nobody has to negotiate shared space. The trade-off is location. Most villas around Calpe sit up in the hills, in areas like Maryvilla, La Fustera, or Cap Negret rather than downtown, and the walk to the nearest supermarket or beach is often 15-20 minutes, sometimes more. Without a car or scheduled transfers, a villa can turn into a beautiful but isolated base, especially on an evening when cooking dinner for the fourth night running has lost its charm.
Hotels and apartments: closer to town, cooking optional
A hotel in Calpe or Benidorm sits at the other end of the spectrum: reception, daily cleaning, breakfast on a schedule, and usually a location you can walk to the seafront from. Nothing to plan ahead — you just walk out the door. The catch is obvious: no kitchen, and feeding a family three meals a day at restaurant prices adds up fast, which matters even more when a small child eats on their own schedule rather than a restaurant’s.
Apartments land in between. Typically a building in town or close to it, with a kitchen and separate rooms but without a villa’s grounds or private pool. You can still cook, and the walk to the seafront or a supermarket is usually five to ten minutes rather than twenty. For a lot of families, an apartment ends up winning simply because it removes a villa’s biggest downside — distance from everything — while keeping the kitchen.
A family for two weeks vs. a couple for a long weekend
Which type actually makes sense depends heavily on group size and trip length. A family of six staying two weeks is almost always better off in a villa: split six ways, a house often costs less per person than several hotel rooms, and cooking at home even just twice a day meaningfully cuts the budget over that many days — six people eating out every night burns through a holiday fund fast. Kids also get a pool right outside the door, which matters more than proximity to the promenade on a long stay with young children.
A couple on a long weekend is a different calculation entirely. For two or three nights, a villa with a pool is usually overkill — dealing with a car, groceries, and cleaning for such a short stay rarely pays off. A central hotel in Calpe or Benidorm is almost always the more sensible choice: check in, walk out, no cooking or parking to think about.
The one thing every stay needs: your exact address
Whichever type of stay you pick, your airport transfer needs one thing in advance — the exact address, not just “Calpe” or the name of a neighbourhood. Hotels and apartments are usually no problem, since they have an official street address and a sign out front. Villas are trickier: many sit on roads with no proper numbering, or a name that no navigation app resolves correctly, and a driver arriving “roughly there” can lose 15-20 minutes circling a residential area in the dark — worse still on a late-night arrival.
